Wilderness 101
Team Pedal Montclair rider Stephen Machnowski raced the Wilderness 101 in Corburn, PA last Saturday. The course takes racers through 101 miles of Bald Eagle and Rothrock State Forests on singletrack, doubletrack, and gravel. Stephen finished around 9.25 hours, averaging over 11 mph.
Here's Stephen's brief recap - "With the variety of terrain it kept the race fun. I'd be climbing a gravel road and at the top turn in to a 10 minute singletrack descent like an enduro stage. It was a pleasure riding some trails I've heard about for some time like Longburger and Sassapig. Even with the size of the area there was almost always a pack to grab on to, work with, and push each other. My time estimation between aid stations 4 (65 miles) & 5 (88 miles) was a bit off and with the full sun out, headwind, and lots of climbing my bottles were both empty about 14 miles short but I had a pack of salted Clif Blox for that situation. I ate the whole pack in one go and washed it down with the last drop of liquid. Thanks to Pedal MTC for the last minute bike fixes the night before the race. It's great knowing your bike has been pulled apart and gone over carefully before subjecting it to these kind of conditions!"
